Webinar: Building Relationships by Sharing Stories Part 2

June 24, 2021
Building Relationships by Sharing Stories Part 2

THIS SESSION HAS ALREADY OCCURRED, BUT YOU CAN WATCH THE ON-DEMAND VIDEO BELOW!

Students’ capacity for empathy can be developed by learning to appreciate other people’s stories. During this webinar, we’ll explore a strategy in which students share their own and other's stories in order to develop insight into the nuances of others' lived experiences, values, and perspectives. In the strategy, students interview others, gaining an opportunity to practice vulnerability and to build trust. Students construct narratives inspired by the “Humans of New York” series, developing skills along the way such as deep listening, understanding varying perspectives, and appreciating differences while finding commonalities. This session focused on:

  • ways to help students develop empathy and use it to better understand others in the class and in school;

  • building students’ ability to ask thoughtful and pointed questions to learn more about peers and deepen relationships.
