Relationship Mapping
Relationship Mapping
There may be nothing more important in a child’s life than a positive and trusting relationship with a caring adult.
For students, a positive connection to at least one school adult can have tremendous benefits that include reduced bullying, lower dropout rates, and improved social-emotional capacities.
Rather than leave these connections to chance,
MCC’s relationship mapping resources help K-12 educators invest time and make data-informed school decisions to ensure that every student has a positive, trusting relationship with at least one adult.
Adult-to-Student Relationship Mapping (Free)
School leaders receive a detailed implementation plan and simple mapping tool from MCC, allowing them to:
Facilitate a staff meeting in which staff identify students who they believe do not currently have positive relationships with any school adults.
Identify staff who will volunteer to build a stronger relationship with these identified students.
Help staff volunteers build and strengthen a relationship with the student throughout the year.

Student-to-Adult Relationship Mapping
School leaders collaborate with MCC to hear directly from students!
School leaders provide students with a short survey in which they identify how many positive and trusting relationships they have with school adults and peers.
Making Caring Common generates and shares a report with the school, providing the names of all students that have 0 positive relationships with adults.
During a staff-only meeting, those students are matched with a staff member who will volunteer to build a relationship the student throughout the year.
MCC’s survey report also help schools understand the strength of staff relationships with students of different racial and gender identities and explore if adjusting school policies or practices can improve these relationships.
