Professional Education: Justice, Care, and Equity Leadership Institute
This program has ended, thank you to the thousands of educators who joined us.
Our current program for schools is the Caring Schools Network, please reach out to find out more!
Learn how schools can more effectively promote students’ commitment to justice and caring for others, including for those different from them in culture, race, political orientation, and other characteristics.
Offered in collaboration with the HGSE's Professional Education Programs, Making Caring Common’s Justice, Care, and Equity Leadership Institute is an opportunity for a diverse and talented group of district and school leaders from across the country to engage with each other and with national experts on how schools can more effectively promote students’ caring and their commitment to justice during this politically and morally troubled time.
Together, participants will learn ways to prepare young people to heal the divisions in our communities; engage meaningfully within and outside their school communities around issues of justice and equity; and explore best practices to develop in all school stakeholders the motivation, awareness, and skills required to create caring and just school communities. These sessions are a great way for both new and experienced district and school leaders to expand their network of like-minded educators, collect and share insights, and engage with Harvard University faculty and other experts on these crucial topics.
Overview
Through a series of five live interactive sessions, school and district leaders will develop a framework for advancing care, equity, and justice in their schools; will learn about concrete tools for developing a caring and just community; and will gather insights and strategies for developing students’ capacity to care across difference and to challenge unjust systems, including racist systems.
Prior to joining virtual sessions, participants will undergo both self and organizational readiness audits and administer a brief survey to students and staff at their school to measure the strengths and needs of their school community. This work will provide real-time data to analyze and work with during live sessions.
During sessions, participants will work directly with their own data, with the support of Harvard faculty, expert practitioners, and a cohort of fellow school leaders, to develop their own action plan to improve their school’s culture and to cultivate in students the skills and capacities needed to create a more caring and just community.
Participants will leave the program with a defined plan and concrete, easy-to-implement strategic interventions that they can put into action immediately to advance this work in their school.
